My Priorities for Weybridge
Weybridge Health Centre Rebuild
After years of delays, consultations, and shifting plans, Elmbridge Borough Council Planning Committee has finally approved the planning application to rebuild Weybridge Health Centre after the devastating fire in 2017. This is welcome news, but it has taken far too long, especially as the last Conservative government signed off the funding years ago. I have been informed that work will start in October 2025 with a planned opening date in 2027. I will monitor this vital work closely on your behalf.
Defend our area from harmful development
Conservatives at Elmbridge Borough Council support a ‘brownfield only’ approach to building new homes. Unfortunately, the Labour government is imposing higher housing targets. Our Council’s Liberal Democrat led coalition (which includes the Independents) are poised to release green spaces. We will insist that any new builds respect the character of Weybridge, its infrastructure and current traffic volume.
Renew our Town Centre
Our high street has not been well supported by the current Council leadership. We have seen parking charges hiked at Churchfield car park and Sunday charging introduced. This hurts shoppers and businesses alike. I am calling for a fairer parking regime and will be a staunch supporter of our shops. Conservative Surrey County Council is delivering a new Library and Community Centre Hub in the town centre which will open in September this year. The childrens splash pool development was officially opened by The Mayor, Mr. Steve Bax, this Summer. With the very warm summer this has proven to be a major attraction with children of all ages.
Repair our roads
Surrey Conservatives led by our Weybridge County Councillor, Tim Oliver, are investing £85m to fix potholes and carry out preventative resurfacing. I will work closely with Surrey County Council to ensure we continue to make progress. This includes renewing road markings and securing additional cutting of grass verges and weed removal. It is important whilst we respect budget constraints we must keep Weybridge moving, looking as smart as possible and thriving as our village. The HGV restriction and the Average Speed Cameras on Brooklands Road has certainly made our roads safer.
Protection from Flooding
We need better protection from flooding. Waterways must be cleaned up and kept clean. Many residents live in properties that are only a few feet above river level. With the changing weather patterns it is vital that our flood defence systems are improved to protect our residents and our environment as swiftly as possible.
Supporting our Education Establishments
I will work with our education establishments to ensure sufficient places for the growing demand as our population increases year on year. This includes more places for SEN students and others with learning difficulties, money has been allocated for this essential service.
